laguna Yoga shala annual teacher training
laguna Yoga shala annual teacher training
July 24th – August 6th, 2010
Our annual Teacher Training course will take place at the Shala in Laguna Niguel, California.
The course is open to serious students of Ashtanga Yoga with proficiency in the primary series.
The course fee is $1500 by May 31st, $1650 after June 1.
This training develops a strong foundation, respect and understanding of the Primary series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. A sound knowledge of the basic principles, alignment, postures, movements and breathing will be taught.
The teaching will be transmitted through two basic methods: The ‘Mysore style’ method and the led class method. You will have the opportunity to work independently at your own level with hands on assistance as well as guided practice where we will learn to count the Vinyasa in the traditional Sanskrit.
This course is suitable for students who want to deepen their practice and teachers alike.
Participants are encouraged to take part in the ongoing classes in the shala for their personal practice and to observe and assist in classes.
The Teacher Training will take place from 12:30 to 5:30 pm daily except Sundays. Personal practice will take place in Itay’s ongoing classes, the cost of which is included in the course fee. A total of 100 hours will be spent in training, practice, observation and assisting in classes during this two week period.
I Getting in touch with the source of creative teaching: Meditation
This is essential. If you want to be creative in your teaching and your practice, and indeed in your life you must consciously get in touch with the Creative. The most direct way to get in touch with it is by sensing deeply into yourself through the practice of meditation.
II Teaching with your hands
The art of teaching Yoga requires sensitivity, compassion and understanding as well as lots of practice. The teacher must lure, prod, encourage and inspire. We will learn how to make safe, accurate and effective adjustments. We will explore the proper execution of the asanas of the primary series and how to adjust and adapt the poses appropriately for the student.
III Teaching with Your Voice
There are many ‘tones’ in a single class. We will learn how to be creative and encourage the now-experience. We will learn how to lead class with proper pacing, pronunciation, synchronization of breath and movement and verbal correction of poses based on what is observed.
IV Yoga Philosophy
We will explore the Yoga Sutras as the philosophical basis of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga.
V Pranayama and Mantra
We will explore Pranayama as the connection between the external and internal practice of yoga. Just as the Asana is the foundation of Pranayama, Pranayama and mantra prepares the mind for meditation.
